Why Should You Honor a Gold Star Family?

A PRIME Insurance Special

Mr. and Mrs. Perry have been grieving since November 12, 2016 when their son, Sgt. John Perry, died as a result of bomb injuries incurred in Afghanistan while protecting a fellow soldier. On Monday November 14, the couple along with their daughter boarded an AA flight in Sacramento, CA. As the plane took off and headed towards its scheduled Philadelphia, PA destination, the Perry’s knew there would be one more connecting flight that would take them to Phoenix, AZ where they would receive the remains of their fallen hero son. When the airplane finally landed in Philadelphia after a 45 minute delay, the crew feared the Gold Star Family might miss their transfering flight. Following an announcement that all passengers should remain seated until the military family disembarked, a number of first-class passengers displayed outrageous behavior. Instead of showing their respect for this family in mourning, they booed and voiced loud protest in regard to the ‘inconvenience’.

About the Gold Star

The Gold Star is a long-established military icon, symbolic of the honor due to families of fallen servicemen or women. Traditionally, military families placed a star on a military flag for each family member serving - blue stars for the living and gold stars for those that gave their lives in the call of duty. Presently, the gold star represents the honor given to families of fallen soldiers. Mothers and fathers of fallen soldiers are presented with the gold star by the US Department of Defense, either to be displayed on a military flag or worn as a lapel pin.

By paying tribute to the Gold Star and the families who stand beind it, the public contributes to the unity of the nation. Let's stand together to salute the next-of-kin of those that made the ultimate sacrifice to protect all of us.
