Q: Why is the number 11 so significant to Veterans Day?

A: Veterans Day is observed on November 11th in remembrance of the 11th hour of the 11th day in the 11th month (11:00, November 11 – 1919) when major hostilities related to World War I ended with an armistice (treaty between opposing countries). 

Q: Who is considered a veteran?

A: Any man or woman who has served during peace or war in the U.S. armed forces.

Q: What is the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day?

A: Memorial Day, held on the last Monday of May, pays tribute to all men and women who died while serving in the U.S. forces.  Veterans Day honors those both living and dead who have served in the U.S. forces.

Q: How do we commemorate Veterans Day?

A:  Veterans Day has always been celebrated with parades and speeches, as well as with a short break from business operation, held at 11:00 a.m.

Q: Is there a special ceremony that the president participates in commemoration?

A: Yes.  On Veterans Day of 1921, an unidentified soldier was buried in the National Cemetery of Arlington, Virginia. Ever since that time, the president or his representative has laid a wreath upon the site that is dubbed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Q: How many veterans currently are there?

A: As of the 2014, there are 319.2 million veterans of the U.S. military, of whom 10 percent are women.

Q: What states have the highest percentage of veterans?

A: California is home to approximately 2 million veterans. Texas has about 1.6 million veterans. And Florida has 1.6 million veterans. These states also have important army bases: Fort Irwin, California and Fort Hood, Texas, and the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida.

Q: Do veterans suffer from post-traumatic stress as a result of horror they have witnessed?

A: Unfortunately, many former soldiers suffer from this disorder, related to war’s violence.

Q: What other social ill affects veterans?

A: Many veterans are not home owners, renters or lodgers, but classified in 12% of the homeless populace.

Q: What about the veterans that have acclimated back to civilian life?

A: Considered prime candidates for entrepreneurship because of skills garnered within the military, veterans actually made up 91% of US business owners, according to a 2012 study.

A: Hiring veterans and donating to veterans are significant venues to help those who have sacrificed so much for all of us.
