All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

How to Be Safe When Driving a Commercial Truck

Unsung heroes of modern commerce, truckers represent the backbone of industry as they transport merchandise as well as raw goods from one location to another.

There’s no doubt that truck drivers face a multitude of risks on their routes.

Prime Insurance offers these related driving tips.

9 Safety Tips for the Truck Driver

  • Buckle up.
It’s the first rule of thumb: Not only is wearing a seat belt a law, it may help prevent death and reduce injury in the event of an accident.

  • Do not multi-task.
This is especially true for cell phone use.

  • Observe speed limits.
Speed limits on the highways can change so keep mindful of posted speed limits.
  • Do not drink and drive.
Drinking and driving can be deadly. If convicted, you may face a suspended license, jail time and loss of your job.

  • Avoid any substance that may impair driving.
Do not drive while taking medication that will make you drowsy. With the recent legalization of recreational marijuana in states like CA, CO, NV and others, like NJ and NY likely to follow suit, beware that you will be stiffly prosecuted if found driving under its influence.
  • Chart your drive.
Planning times and course of your driving in conjunction with weather predictions and traffic snarls will aid you in safety.

  • Reduce speed on exit ramps, turns and curves.
Exit ramps, lane changes and curvy roadways require slower driving for control.
  • Keep a safe distance between your truck and other vehicles.
Because of your larger presence in terms of height and width, you need to maintain an appropriate distance to avoid dangerous situations.

  • Eat and sleep well prior to a trip.
This will help you be alert and mindful of your driving safety. If you feel yourself getting drowsy, pull over and take a nap.
