All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

Why Insurance Rates are rising for Female Teen Drivers

Though young female drivers are far less likely to be involved in hazardous driving than their male counterparts, something is taking place in various states across the United States to change the reflecting rate disparity.

Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and now California are leading the way in banning auto insurance companies from basing rates according to gender type.

The practice using gender types as a guide to rates has been standard until recently. Using simple math, car insurance companies have shown that statistically, young male drivers are more prone to dangerous driving. Hence, higher auto premiums.

The trend to shift scheduled premium rates that are based on gender may be welcomed as a plus solely for teenage male drivers.

New Auto Insurance Rates for Young Drivers

In California, for example, where the gender ban jas been enacted, rates will reflect individual safe driving records along with driving experience and factors like a car’s safety features, resulting in about a 5 percent auto insurance rate decrease for boys.

Not so for females in the same age group and driving experience category who in fact may see a raise of about 6 percent in their auto premiums as a result of the new law.

As the new law makes a stir in affected areas and states like NJ, NY, CT and MD continue to charge male and female drivers according to gender automobile crash statistics, related changes can occur any time in the future.

Stay tuned.
